Press Releases

In April 1998, JPL scientists Dr. David Koerner (now at UPenn) and Dr. Michael Werner held a NASA Space Science Update conference announcing the discovery of a planetary debris disk around the star HR 4796. The observations were made with MIRLIN at the Keck II telescope. Also present was Dr. Lee Hartmann of Harvard University, who represented a second research team which made contemporaneous observations with a similar camera at a different telescope, and Dr. Michael Jura of UCLA, who first found that there was something peculiar about HR 4796 over a decade earlier. In October 2002, we released the highest resolution image yet obtained of the Galactic Center at mid-infrared wavelengths. Click on the picture at left for the pictures and the release.
